Distinguished and Famous people from Break O Day

Break O'Day's public life includes a St Marys-born politician whose work also extended into local enterprise and community organisations. His story connects the municipality's towns with state government.

🏛️ David Llewellyn

David Llewellyn was born in St Marys in 1942. He represented Lyons in Tasmania's House of Assembly from 1986 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2018, serving as a minister and as deputy premier from 2004 to 2006. Before his parliamentary career he worked in electronic engineering, including senior technical and operations roles. His local connections also include ownership and management of Priory Ridge Wines at St Helens and service with Break O'Day Community Financial Services. Appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2012, he brings a documented combination of local birth, business and public service to the municipality's history.

📐 Brian Bannatyne Lewis

Brian Bannatyne Lewis was born at Lottah in 1906, where his father managed the Anchor tin mine. The family moved to Victoria in 1909, and his later studies led to an architectural career in Britain and Australia. He designed London Underground stations and, after becoming the University of Melbourne’s professor of architecture, helped reshape professional training. His University House at the Australian National University earned the Sulman Medal. Lottah supplies a precise birthplace and mining-family connection, preceding the buildings and teaching for which he became known. His path from a Tasmanian tin-mining settlement to university campuses crossed several very different architectural worlds.
